Am I hypersensitive? The 12 unmistakable signs

It's 7pm. You come home from a "normal" day — meetings, lunch with colleagues, commute. Everyone around you seems fine. You're exhausted. Not a little tired. Drained.

You wonder what's wrong. Yet it all seemed so ordinary.

If this scene speaks to you, this article is for you.

What is hypersensitivity?

Hypersensitivity — or High Sensitivity (HSP) — is a temperament trait identified by psychologist Elaine Aron in the 1990s. It affects about 20% of the population, men and women alike.

It's not a disease. It's not a weakness. It's a nervous system wired differently, which processes information more deeply than average.

The 12 signs you might be highly sensitive

1. You feel exhausted after "normal" social situations

A 1-hour meeting, a family meal, an evening with friends — everyday situations for most. For you, your nervous system processed 10 times more information than others.

2. Details rarely escape you

You notice the shift in someone's voice, the held-back tear, the atmosphere of a room as you walk in. Others find it "intuitive" — for you, it's just normal.

3. You absorb others' emotions

Someone is sad near you — you feel sad. This is somatic empathy: you physically feel others' emotional states. An extraordinary gift... that can also drain you.

4. Violence, even fictional, deeply affects you

Violent films, news, shocking documentaries — your brain processes them as if they were real. It's a neurological response, not oversensitivity.

5. You need a lot of alone time

Out of physiological necessity. Your nervous system needs to "empty the overflow." Without these moments, you quickly feel overwhelmed.

6. Sudden changes throw you off

A plan that changes at the last minute, an unexpected announcement — where others adapt quickly, you need time to readjust.

7. You're deeply moved by beauty

Music, a sunset, a well-written sentence — you might cry at beauty. This is a typical characteristic of HSP individuals.

8. You think a lot before acting

You analyze deeply, consider consequences and nuances. This "deep processing of information" is THE central characteristic of hypersensitivity according to Elaine Aron.

9. Criticism touches you lastingly

An offhand remark can spin in your head for hours. You processed it deeply, analyzed it from every angle.

10. Noise, bright lights and crowds exhaust you quickly

Open offices, malls, concerts — your nervous system processes every stimulus with more intensity than average.

11. You sense what others keep unsaid

Beyond what's said, you pick up on the unsaid, tensions, discomfort. You're often the one people confide in — spontaneously.

12. You've always felt "too much"

Too sensitive. Too intense. Too complicated. Today, you might start to consider that this isn't a flaw — but a different way of being in the world.
